Trip Meeting 6.15.10

Sean and I decided burritos and ultimate nachos, so we'll just bring that. Also...

What should we discuss?
I think for SURE:

  • Budgeting (how much we'll need to put aside for trip, how much certain shit costs, etc.).
  • Things to do for the places we haven't decided yet
  • Sweet ass lists of shit we'll need to have (or we could do that later)

And.......what else dudes?

Friday, June 11, 2010

This is how it works.

I'm just updating this page with links and such to things we might find interesting for our trip, and to CONSOLIDATE everything into one place, like Chelsea's awesome calendar, etc. Utilize it or not! (I kinda need everything in one place for myself at the moment.)

I made a separate posting for each stop, and will include links and whatnot for stuff that we find interesting. You can quick click to a place by using the links on the right side of the page. They are in descending order. Also, I'll put up any lists we make later.

I will usually post stuff first about where we're staying, followed by the activities.

We should really consider getting AAA before we book any motels, we could get sweet azz discounts.

Chelsea's updated calendar is located at the very bottom (last post). If you click it, you can view it larger.

OK now I don't know how to re-arrange them in the correct order.  Oops.

GLACIER NATIONAL PARK

WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 18-FRIDAY, AUGUST 20

WHERE TO STAY:
http://www.nps.gov/glac/planyourvisit/camping.htm

Prices and other info:
http://www.nps.gov/glac/parknews/news10-21.htm

There's a LOT of campgrounds here, so we'll probably just pick one when we get there. They've got some interesting rules (like Free showers available at private campsites across street, no using sinks to clean dishes, etc.)

VANCOUVER

FRIDAY, AUGUST 13-TUESDAY, AUGUST 17
From a friend who has lived there before:

Vancouver huh? Well I am the expert. Driving in downtown is a nightmare since the streets are so small. The real Vancouver experience is walking and/or taking the Skytrain where you need to go. Everything is close by and in walking distance. I would suggest parking the car somewheres and leaving it for a few days.

Not sure what your main interests are but there are some cool clubs and music venues on Granville St. In fact this is pretty much the main street for entertainment and bar hopping. When I was there, Cafe Crepe had $10 pitchers of beer! There is also the Cambie on Cambie street. The section of town leaves something to be desired, but this bar is a hot spot for all international travelers alike.

If you want to relax, I'd say hit Jericho beach, or go across the bay to Sunset Beach. Those two have beautiful views and cool people that hang out. Both of those are near Grandville Island, which is a unique slice of port city living.

Something I always do in Vancity is Walk or bike around Stanley Park. This is also where the Vancouver Aquarium is and that has to be my favorite place besides seeing a hockey game at General Motors place.

If you are gay friendly, Davie St is the place to go for that flavor. Plenty of bars and shops run by LGBTs. Kodak developing center is also located near there so if you are as big a film nerd as I am, you should see if you can get a Kodak tour. :)

I will say Gastown is a tourist trap. But if you like that sort of silly family stuff, go there.

Also get down into China town, but only in the daytime as you need to go through bum city to get there.

If you like smoking the green, there are two pot cafes on Hastings street which I think are still open. Bring your own pot.

That's another thing, pot smoking and prostitution are legal, as long as you do not openly sell either. You are permitted to have and smoke. But don't try to smuggle it across the boarder.

If you need to do some shopping there is a lovely underground mall called Pacific Centre which I believe can be accessed via skytrain or on Granville street.

But all this is on the upper peninsula and in the downtown area. I never spent much time on the lower mainland since that is mostly suburbs and boring.

That's a lot of info. I hope your ADD let you get through all of that. If you have anymore questions, let me know. :)

BADLANDS

FRIDAY, AUGUST 20-SUNDAY, AUGUST 22

Camping: FREE CAMPING ON-SITE AT SAGE CREEK PRIMITIVE (vs. $14 at Cedar Pass).
No showers or electricity. No reservations required, but it'd be smart since it's first-come-first-served. Also, no campfires allowed, so we'll plan on the wok and other things.
Badlands Camping

For Sage Creek Primitive:
"Bison often wander through this primitive campground, located on the west side of the park's North Unit, near the Badlands Wilderness Area. Access is located off of the Sage Creek Rim Road, an unpaved road that may temporarily close after winter storms and spring rains. The road provides limited turnarounds for large recreational vehicles. Camping is free of charge. Pit toilets and covered picnic tables are available, but no water is available on-site. A portion of the Sage Creek Campground is designated for horse use."
